Good makeup does not cause acne. If you’re someone who likes to wear makeup, choose products labelled “noncomedogenic” or “nonacnegenic,” which means the product won’t clog your pores or cause breakouts. Some cosmetics even contain acne-fighting ingredients such as salicylic acid. Wearing a non-comedogenic moisturizing cream before applying makeup is very effective in reducing acne or breakouts. If yours is acne-prone skin, then there are chances that your dermatologist might ask you to avoid using makeup during the course of your treatment, due to its potential to aggravate existing acne.

Makeup can only irritate your skin if you’re using the wrong products. Makeup that’s non-comedogenic won’t cause any issues unless you forget to remove them at night. Although you might be compelled to scrub the skin to remove makeup, a mild cleanser should be gently applied using the fingertips and rinsed off with lukewarm water to minimize skin irritation. Any makeup remaining on the skin after washing should be gently removed with an oil-free makeup remover.
